Feminist Fashion, is it an oxymoron or could it become a new trend? How did these two words ever end up side by side? Well, once upon a time (yesterday) I launched my first Etsy shop: Derelict Workwear! One of the many steps in doing so Etsy encourages you to join a team. A team is comprised of sellers who share something in common. For the most part I’m not really interested in being part of a team, not because I’m a stck-in-the-mud but because I will always opt for the choice which involves less screen time. However, I figured I’d give it a shot since I’m new to how things work on Etsy. Based on my shop and it’s listings, I was pleasantly surprised that Etsy was unable to recommend a team for me to join. I must be doing something right if the artificial intelligence systems can not classify me, even if its to my immediate detriment.
At this point, to proceed further I am offered the blank Search box as a secondary method for me to find a team to join. I’m instructed to type in a description or category that might pertain to what I’m selling or who I am as a seller. With that thought, I’m as blank as the Search box. I have no idea how to classify what it is that I am or do as an Etsy Seller. I check my friend’s shops to see what teams they are on. Local Cape Breton Crafters, and Natural Hemp Life, the funny thing is that to some degree I could fit into either of these groups, as I am living and making my products (which are Hemp based) in Cape Breton. But anyone who knows me, knows that neither of these categories (no offense) would suit me or my customer base very well. So I thought, what is it about my shop/products that is the most important to me? That was an easy question, because the answer is always the same no matter what my endeavor: the concept is most important.
The concept behind Derelict Workwear is shared repeatedly in my Etsy shop, it appears in each of the Item Listings, it appears in My Profile page, in the About Shop page, the Shop Announcement page, wherever I can squeeze it in. But until the “team” question was presented, I had not really thought about how to categorize who I am or what I am offering. A team description awaited as the curser in the blank Search box kept blinking at me, and so off-handedly I typed: Feminist Fashion Forum. As soon as I entered that description I began to get a little excited thinking I might have just stumbled onto an unknown collective of like-minded individuals. Zero Results Found, was the only response. But then came the offer for me to initiate my own team and be it’s Captain. Feminist Fashion Forum, it does have a certain ring to it! Hmmmm….?
Until then check out my: Derelict Workwear on Etsy
