Inspired by the tiny orange flowers in Japan known as Kinmokusei, I created this work. The outer layer of fabric is a textured lace like structure created through the use of devoré. The fabric is dyed and silkscreen printed three times; first with discharge, second with an orange dye, and third with devoré. The underneath layer of fabric sourced from a kimono can be seen through the small decorative ‘holes’ which have been burned away from the top layer. For the bodice of the dress both layers are stitched together with small running stitches, while the skirt section layers drape free of each other creating a variation in visual effect.
This work was exhibited in Japan at the Kyoto City University of the Arts in 2001, and at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, NS in 2002.
