Prayer of Petals is a work inspired by the Japanese custom of senbazuru. Senbazuru is a string of 1,000 origami paper cranes that is made for someone who is suffering. This work, on a much larger scale, is constructed from heart-shaped pieces of fabric that have been hand cut from second-hand kimonos. When strung together, 1,000 of these small fabric heart shapes take on the appearance of flower petals. In total, 29 strands of 1,000 pieces each were exhibited for an installation at Art Forum JARFO, Kyoto, Japan in 2008. This work was the second in a series of seven related installations which were created while in conjunction with the Monbukagakusho scholarship.
